Palliative care relieves suffering and improves quality of life for people of any age and at any stage with a serious illness, whether that illness is curable, chronic or life-threatening. In oncology/hematology it is given to relieve symptoms or to prevent and/or delay onset of symptoms. Palliative care can help patients with many types of cancer when a cure is not expected. Sometimes, chemotherapy is given as long as it is effective, while other times there are breaks of months or years between treatment courses.
