Adjuvant Chemotherapy

This is a treatment for patients with certain types of cancer given after surgery to prevent or decrease the risk of recurrence.  This idea first started with breast cancer but is now used for many cancers, e.g. colon, rectal, lung and stomach.  Also, in some cancer patients we give chemotherapy before surgery – neo adjuvant – to make the tumor able to be removed or easier to be removed, e.g. breast, lung, rectal, throat and esophagus.
